Five girls, as young as 12, are accused of beating 64-year-old Reggie Brown to death in October 2023.
WASHINGTON — Two of the five teenage girls accused of beating a man to death in October 2023 appeared in court Friday, during which the 13-year-old defendant punched a U.S. Marshal.
The 13-year-old and a 15-year-old are the latest arrested in the death of 64-year-old Reggie Brown.
Brown was found dead along Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C. on Oct. 17, 2023. Officials say he was beaten to death. Since his death, five girls have been arrested in connection. In March, three girls, two 13-year-olds and a 12-year-old, were charged with second-degree murder.
On Thursday, police announced the additional arrests and the newest accused killers were scheduled to appear in court. That appearance began around 3 p.m. and didn't wrap up until just before 10 p.m. but not before a wild scene broke out in the courtroom.
WUSA9 was in the courtroom when the 13-year-old defendant interrupted proceedings and punched a U.S. Marshal. That girl was later taken away from court on a stretcher.
Prosecutors then proceeded, laying the case out against the 15-year-old defendant, the oldest suspect in Brown's death.
On Friday, prosecutors played video of the attack captured not only by surveillance cameras but also cellphone video of the brutal beating. That video was allegedly recorded by one of the girls accused of killing Brown.
The videos show five young girls and a man chasing Brown into an alley, then capture the people kicking Brown as he lay in a pool of blood. Afterward, the camera turned as the girls took selfies.
In addition to the second-degree murder charges, the young girls face a charge of tampering with evidence. The pair will be held at the DC Youth Services Center until their next court appearance.
