WASHINGTON — Police are investigating after two teens were thrown from a scooter in a crash Thursday that left one dead.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Capitol Street, Southwest.

Investigators say a 16-year-old and 17-year-old were riding on a stolen Fly Wing 150cc scooter when a black vehicle going the opposite direction hit the scooter while turning left toward Halley Place, Southeast.

The car hit the scooter head-on, causing both teens to be thrown from the scooter, MPD said in a press release Friday. The 16-year-old, later identified as Da’Ron Ross, died in the crash. The other teen was taken to an area hospital for help and is expected to survive.

The car that hit the scooter drove away before police arrived. There is no information regarding any vehicle or driver description at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
