All residents were able to get out of the apartment safely, firefighters said.
SILVER SPRING, Md. — A two-alarm fire has forced residents to evacuate their apartment during a rainy Thursday morning in Silver Spring. Firefighters say everyone made it out of the apartment safely, but they are still working to extinguish the flames.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said crews were called to the The Lockwood apartments in 11400 block of Lockwood Drive, off New Hampshire Avenue, near the White Oak Community Rec Center, for a report of a fire just after 6 a.m.
Crews arrived on the scene to find a three-story garden apartment on fire with people still inside. A second alarm was called to get more firefighters to the scene to fight the flames and get people out of the apartment safely.
A total of 75 firefighters responded to the fire, Piringer said. The fire was found on the first floor of the apartments and crews worked quickly to make sure it did not extend further into the building. Other firefighters worked to get residents out of the building.
By 6:30 a.m., Piringer said the bulk of the fire was knocked down, and all of the residents had been evacuated safely. No injuries were reported, according to Piringer.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
