2 women shot, officer hurt after DC basketball game

Police are searching for a red SUV.

WASHINGTON — A shooting in Southwest, D.C. sent two people to the hospital late Thursday night. Metropolitan Police Department detectives are still searching for suspects in a red SUV.

Officers were monitoring a basketball game in the 1200 block of Canal Street Southwest near King Greenleaf Recreation Center. As the game ended around 11:30 p.m., officers were walking through the basketball court and heard gunshots. 

A woman was shot and taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries not thought to be life-threatening. A short time later, another woman arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound. She is also being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

DC Police say an officer was hurt in the shooting and taken to an area hospital for evaluation. According to the DC Police Union, the officer was struck in the chest with one round. His ballistic vest absorbed the impact and the officer was not seriously hurt. 

"The officer did not return fire and the suspect is still at large," the union rep continued. "Anyone with information on this incident should contact MPD."

We can confirm that one of our members was shot early this morning in the 1200 block of Canal Street SW. The officer was monitoring a basketball game and was struck in the chest with one round. Luckily, his ballistic vest absorbed the impact and he was not seriously injured.

Investigators with D.C.'s Real Time Crime Center combed through surveillance cameras in the area and found footage of a red SUV leaving the scene.
