MARYLAND, USA — Elections were held in all of Maryland's eight U.S. House seats on Tuesday, as well as one U.S. Senate seat. Maryland voters also decided on whether to add a right to abortion to the state's constitution.
Democratic Prince George's Executive Angela Alsobrooks was the projected winner, according to AP in her race against former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican. Alsobrooks will replace 81-year-old Democrat Ben Cardin, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of this year.
In Maryland's 1st U.S. House District, which includes most of the Eastern Shore, AP projects Republican Rep. Andy Harris has won reelection. Rep. Harris has served Maryland's 1st district since 2011. Harris faced Democratic candidate Blane Miller in the 2024 election race.
In Maryland's 2nd congressional district, which includes parts of Carroll and Baltimore Counties, has elected Democratic Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski to replace Democratic Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, according to the A.P. The 42-year-old Democrat defeated Republican opponent Kim Klacik.
In Maryland's 3rd congressional district, Democratic State Senator Sarah Elfreth is the projected winner of the race to replace Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes. The 36-year-old Democrat defeated Republican Robert Steinberger, according to the A.P.
Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey was the projected winner in his race for reelection in Maryland's 4th District, which comprises most of Prince George's County and some of Montgomery County, including College Park, Greenbelt and Laurel. This is Rep. Ivey's second election victory in the district, which he has represented since 2023. Ivey faced Republican candidate George McDermott.
Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer was the projected winner in his race for reelection in Maryland's 5th congressional district, which makes up all of Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert counties. 85-year-old Rep. Hoyer has represented the 5th district since 1981 and is the third oldest member of the chamber. Hoyer faced Republican Michelle Talkington in 2024.
In Maryland's 7th congressional district, which comprises most of Baltimore and some of Baltimore County, Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume has won reelection, according to AP. Rep. Mfume has been in office in office since 2020 replacing Rep. Elijah Cummings. 76-year-old Mfume also served the 7th district from 1987 to 1996. Mfume defeated Republican Scott Collier in the race for the 7th district.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin was the projected winner in his race for reelection to Maryland's 8th congressional district, which makes up part of Montgomery County and extends through rural Frederick County. Rep. Raskin has served in Congress since 2017. Raskin faced Republican Cheryl Riley in the 2024 race.
The right to an abortion will be be added to Maryland’s state constitution, AP projected Tuesday night.
Question 1 on the Maryland ballot this November asked voters to approve amending the state constitution to add the right to reproductive freedom, codifying abortion protection.
