Thousands of people attended a vigil at the school Friday night to honor three alumni who were killed in a crash July 6.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Prince George's County Police are working to determine who shot two people, killing one man, outside of Wise High School Friday night. The shooting happened after a candlelight vigil held to honor three alumni killed in a car crash was wrapping up.

Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson and two of his former high school teammates – Isaiah Hazel and Anthony "AJ" Lytton Jr. – were killed in a crash on July 6 when a speeding driver crashed into them.

Thousands attended the vigil, for a night that was meant to heal. But as the crowds dispersed and police were leaving around 10 p.m. gunfire erupted outside the school.

A man and a woman were both shot and taken to an area hospital. The woman is expected to survive, while the man died of his injuries.

Police identified the man Saturday as 24-year-old Shahid Omar Jr., from Upper Marlboro. WUSA9 spoke to Omar's cousin Saturday afternoon in Wise High School's parking lot. He said Omar had a young daughter and was expecting another child.

Prince George's County Police say officers patrolling the parking lot of Wise High School left 30 seconds before the shooting and heard the gunfire.

“Actually, they were the ones who actually initiated the initial call to our dispatch. That’s when everybody started getting responded. No citizens called 911, our officer initiated the call," said Captain Sukhjit Batth, the Acting Commander with the Major Crimes Division. "They quickly turned around, returned to the scene, were flagged down by citizens who were actually performing life saving measures on a female adult victim.”

Police have not released any information regarding the shooters at this time, however, officials have confirmed that a gun was found in the area. There is no word yet on any motive or what happened before the shooting.

WUSA9 reporter Alexis Wainwright was at the school to attend the vigil. Police have not connected the vigil to the shooting.
