The same summer in which Woodstock took place saw another music festival, one that arguably had just as much cultural impact: the Harlem Culture Festival. Over six weekends in the summer of 1969, the Harlem Culture Festival saw performances from Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, and Nina Simone, amongst others; but until 2021, footage of the festival was never widely shown, and it faded into obscurity.
Summer of Soul is a documentary celebrating Black history and music at a festival that most people don't even know took place. If you want to see some fantastic performances and a beautiful moment in American history, check it out!
