"This documentary sheds light on the complexities of child stardom."
Demi Lovato is set to make her directorial debut with an upcoming Hulu documentary called Child Star.
The 31-year-old singer and actor, who landed her first on-screen role when she was around 10 years old on Barney & Friends, knows a thing or two about growing up in the public eye.
She's also been pretty vocal about the highlights and challenges she's faced after entering the entertainment business at such a young age, which is why she wanted to explore that shared experience with fellow child stars for this new project.
“I’m so proud to make my directorial debut with this documentary that sheds light on the complexities of child stardom, a topic that is very close to my heart,” Demi told the Hollywood Reporter.
Demi has tapped her fellow Camp Rock costar Alyson Stoner for the documentary — who some of you might also recognize from her early start as a backup dancer for artists like Missy Elliott and Eminem.
Drew Barrymore, who had her breakout role in E.T. when she was 7, will also be making an appearance.
Raven-Symoné, who landed her first leading role at the age of 3 as little Olivia Kendall on The Cosby Show, is continuing her longstanding reign on Disney Channel and lending her insights on life in the limelight.
SNL vet Kenan Thompson, who a lot of you might also recognize from his early days on Nickelodeon's All That when he was just 16, will also share his thoughts on child stardom. Kenan previously lent his commentary on the Quiet on Set documentary which shined a light on the harsh working conditions and alleged abuse that took place behind the scenes with child actors.
Fans can also expect to see Christina Ricci, who made her film debut when she was 9 in Mermaids alongside Cher and Winona Ryder, in the project.
And last but certainly not least, JoJo Siwa, who grew her claim-to-fame as an aspiring dancer on Dance Moms, is expected to open up about her time in Hollywood.
“I want to thank our cast for being so vulnerable with their stories," Demi added. "And our contributors for sharing their knowledge to help push the conversation forward."
"I hope viewers will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and pressures faced by young people in the industry so we can achieve our goal of creating a safer and more supportive environment for future generations young talents in entertainment, social media and beyond.”
The 90-minute documentary is expected to hit Hulu on Sept. 17. To learn more about Child Star and Demi's involvement in it, be sure to check out her full Hollywood Reporter interview.
