A Virginia teen is facing charges for making online threats against a school

LEESBURG, Va. — A teen is in police custody for allegedly making online threats against a school on 9/11.

Leesburg Police say on Sept. 11 just after 12:15 a.m., officers were alerted to a series of threatening text messages made by the teen. Within 45 minutes, police were able to identify and locate the teen. 

With so many acts of violence being committed on school campuses across the country, police are taking every threat seriously. The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney decided to charge the teen with making threats via electronic communications. 

Police have not released any information regarding the teen's identity and won't because of their age.

"False threats, whether intended as a joke or not, have real-world consequences," Chief Thea Pirnat emphasized. "These types of incidents divert critical resources, cause unnecessary fear, and disrupt the safety and well-being of our community. We take all threats seriously, and those who make them will be held accountable."
