Ayo Edebiri stepped into a new role for The Bear — director —and it's being met with applause by her costars.
That's right, Season 3 of The Bear is finally here and fans will not only get to see Ayo return as her beloved character, sous-chef Sydney Adamu, but they'll also get to watch her make her directorial debut.
The Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian directed Episode 6 titled "Napkins." The special flashback episode tells the story of Tina Marrero, played by Liza Colón-Zayas. Series creator Chris Storer was keen on the two working together, and Ayo jokingly thought it was because they were "the two most toxic people" on set.
"I cried," Ayo told Deadline. "It was written very beautifully," she said of reading the script for the first time. "I was just so moved by it and really, really touched that Chris [Storer] had me in mind to direct it. I could see it as soon as I read it."
“I feel like I got a master class in acting from Liza and from the other actors who got to grace the screen,” Edebiri told Variety about the one-of-a-kind learning experience. “I feel like I learned so much from our crew, from our camera department… just from everybody."
But she wasn't the only one gushing about the experience. Liza had nothing but sweet words for Ayo and her directing style on set.
“She’s open, smart and fearless," Liza told Variety. "So fearless that I was watching and putting ideas in my head like, ‘Why can’t I just be so fearless and know that I could take chances like that.’ [Ayo] sailed through it.”
Oh, but the costar comments didn't stop there. On Tuesday, at the LA premiere of the show, Jeremy Allen White couldn't help but gush about his friend.
"I can say she did a beautiful job," Jeremy told Variety. "She was very confident, I mean everybody knows how smart she is," he continued. "She's a beautiful actress and a very intuitive actress. And I think she’s a very beautiful and intuitive director as well."
