WASHINGTON — Family and friends continue to mourn the loss of 39 year-old Bryan Smith.

Smith’s partner, Tyler Nix told WUSA9, Smith was a well-known DJ, barber and stylist in the LGBTQ nightlife community.

“It’s really sad. I miss him so much. To not have the person you talk to everyday in your life-to not get that anymore is really hard.” Nix said.

DC police said, the attack happened on Oct. 26 in the 500 block of T Street NW.

Nix said Smith had an appearance at a club earlier that night. After the event, they both went to a friend's house. Nix said, at around 4 or 5 a.m.,  they went their separate ways.

Not long after, Smith was robbed and attacked. DC police told WUSA9, officers found Smith unresponsive with blood on his nose.

Smith was rushed to the hospital. Nix said he had been texting his partner after leaving their friend's house and everything seemed fine.

“He was texting me the whole time and didn’t say anything otherworldly. I don't think he was targeted, I think it was just wrong place wrong time.” Nix, said.

Smith was hospitalized with severe head injuries. On Nov. 8, he passed away surrounded by friends and family.

That same night, DC police said two other men were assaulted and robbed by a group of about 40-50 people along Potomac Avenue and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail in Southeast.

Police said the suspects got away with cash, clothes and credit cards, which were later used. It’s unclear if all incidents are related.

Nix said the attack has shattered the community’s sense of safety.

“It’s frustrating... even now, I have friends that are afraid to walk to work.” Nix said.

Nix is hoping someone out there knows something that can help police track down Smith’s killer.

Nix said he’ll always remember his partner as the fun-loving soul he was.

“I have all our pictures and all the music we share. I’ll cherish those moments.” Nix said.

Family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
