"They were like, 'Play Beyoncé!' And I was like, 'We can’t afford it!'"
You may have seen trailers for Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut.
The thriller follows cocktail waitress Frida, who winds up on a luxurious private island after meeting a tech billionaire at his fundraising gala.
Now, without giving any spoilers away, one of the most climactic moments of the movie features the iconic song “I’m That Girl” by the one and only Queen Bey.
If you know anything about Beyoncé, she doesn’t give permission for people to use her songs lightly, so we had to ask Zoë how she managed to get it in there.
Zoë explained that when the cast were filming that scene, she was playing music on set because she wanted the girls to “feel as badass as possible.” Naturally, Naomi Ackie and Adria Arjona requested Beyoncé.
So she played the song during the filming, but when it came to the edit, she put the song in and quickly realised that nothing else would beat it.
Zoë sent it to Beyoncé’s team, saying, “I have to at least try – it won’t happen, but I’ll try. And she said yes, I still can’t believe it.”
So there you have it: Blink Twice has the Beyoncé co-sign, and once you see the film, you’ll understand why.
