Bon Iver to Stump for Kamala Harris With Appearance at Wisconsin Rally

There’s still an empty slot on Kamala Harris‘ dance card for her rally Wednesday night in western Wisconsin — that would be her pick for running mate, which will be revealed Tuesday — but the band that they or their supporters will be dancing to has been revealed. Bon Iver will be performing during the event.

Of course, actual dancing is not guaranteed — this is Bon Iver, after all — but the crowd’s rapt attention for a set of hometown heroes probably is.

In a statement, the Harris campaign said: “Bon Iver is taking part because they know Vice President Harris’ values are Wisconsin values. Lead singer Justin Vernon will be joined by bandmates Sean Carey and Michael Lewis to celebrate the state two of them call home and where Bon Iver was founded.”

The campaign’s statement continued, “Bon Iver has constantly uplifted their hometown: they consistently debuted new music at the Eaux Claires Music Festival and have regularly invested in and uplifted the local economy. The band has also regularly done Get Out The Vote events in Wisconsin. In 2022, they launched a non-partisan effort For Wisconsin to encourage people to bridge their differences and engage in the political process — and over the past month alone they have used their platform to uplift multiple pro-democracy and civil right organizations.”

In the previous two presidential election cycles, Bon Iver was also active, throwing its support behind Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders with appearances at rallies in Eau Claire in 2016 and 2020.

The location of the rally has not been revealed so far, reportedly for security reasons. A registration page urges Harris supporters to sign up for more details about attending the rally, saying more information will be available 12-24 hours before the event.

As of Monday, Harris’ choice of running mate remained unknown, although national news reports have identified Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz., Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as leading contenders.

Harris has already received shows of support from artists throughout the music community, with Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo appearing at a recent rally in Atlanta, Beyoncé offering “Freedom” as a campaign song, Charli XCX lending her “Brat” energy on the meme front and other artists posting endorsements on social media.

Bon Iver last released a new album in 2019, with “I, I,” which was nominated for album of the year at the Grammys. The group has remained somewhat in the limelight, though, thanks to collaborations with Taylor Swift on her “Folklore” and “Evermore” albums and with Zack Bryan on his “Boys of Faith” EP. One-off songs from the group in recent years have ranged from a number recorded for the movie “Don’t Look Up” to songs created for the Sanders campaign or the Direct Relief charity.

The group has been nominated for 10 Grammys altogether and won two, including best new artist in 2012.
