Celebrities Are Mourning The Loss Of Donald Sutherland, And It's Heartbreaking

Celebrities from around the world are reacting to the recent news that actor Donald Sutherland has passed away at 88.

His son, Kiefer Sutherland, broke the news in a Tweet on June 20, sharing that Donald had "a life well lived."

With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Elliott Gould, who starred in M*A*S*H* alongside Donald, posted to Instagram. The caption includes: "It's never easy, losing the caliber of a human being and actor like Donald Sutherland, but this one really profoundly hurts because Donald was like my brother, and a big part of my own career." He closed the tribute with, "I love you and I will never forget you."

Tom Blyth — who played the younger version of Sutherland's iconic President Snow character in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes — posted to Instagram, explaining how it was "the honour of a lifetime to follow in his footsteps," and thanked Sutherland "for birthing one of the great movie characters of all time."

Rachel Zegler, who also starred in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, shared Variety's Instagram post with three broken-heart emojis. She also commented a heart on Tom Blyth's tribute post.

Jane Fonda posted a beautiful tribute on Instagram. She said she is "heartbroken" and said they "loved working together" as costars in Klute.

Helen Mirren said, "Donald Sutherland was one of the smartest actors I ever worked with. He had a wonderful enquiring brain, and a great knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity, and with a seriousness about his profession as an actor. This all made him into the legend of film that he became. He was my colleague and became my friend. I will miss his presence in this world."

Rob Lowe, who worked with Sutherland on a TV series called Salem's Lot, shared a tribute on X. He calls Sutherland "one of our greatest actors," and commends his "charisma and ability."

He also commented on Variety's post: "We have lost a legend 🙏"

In an interview right after Donald's passing, Carol Burnett said, "I'm a big fan of his, and one of my favourite performances of his was with Mary Tyler Moore in… Ordinary People. He tore my heart apart. He was so wonderful, and it was a different role for him, a different kind of a role for Donald."
