Curbside composting pilot program coming to DC

WASHINGTON — A new curbside composting program is launching in Washington, D.C. this summer.

The Department of Public Works' (DPW) Office of Waste Diversion will launch the Curbside Composting Pilot Program, which will provide curbside food waste collection to 12,000 households in the District of Columbia for one year.

Residents interested in participating must sign up ahead of time.

Officials say up to 1,500 households within each of the city's eight wards will be selected to participate in the pilot program on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Sign-ups will open on Saturday at 9 a.m. 

If your household currently receives trash and recycling services from the D.C. Department of Public Works (DPW), then you are eligible to sign up to participate.

Officials say commercial properties and households living in multi-family residential buildings with four or more units are not eligible.

Selected households will receive a confirmation email from the Department of Public Works’ Office of Waste Diversion via curbsidecomposting@dc.gov.
