DC Council to meet on Monday to discuss future of Council member Trayon White

Chairman Phil Mendelson said he plans to remove White from his role as the chair of the Committee on Recreation, Libraries, and Youth Affairs on Monday.

WASHINGTON — The future of DC Ward 8 councilmember Trayon White remains uncertain as of Sunday night.

In August, D.C. council member White was arrested by the FBI in Southeast. White is accused of taking thousands of dollars in bribes with the promise of further kickbacks. If convicted, he faces 156 years in prison and will lose his seat on the council.

On Thursday, White pled not guilty to bribery and says he will continue his run for re-election. White said he will be back in his office on Monday, when the D.C. Council return from recess.

Chairman Phil Mendelson said he plans to remove White from his role as the chair of the Committee on Recreation, Libraries, and Youth Affairs on Monday.

Mendelson said he would also establish an Ad Hoc Committee, to conduct an independent investigation to determine if White has broken any council rules. Tuesday will be the first time the Council will convene all together, including Councilmember White.

Residents tell WUSA9, they feel discouraged, saying, regardless of the outcome, It will impact their decision to vote.

Chairman Mendelson will be holding a press conference Monday morning at 10:30,  where he will be answering any questions.
