Dolphins placing QB Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve: Reports

1 day ago 1

The Miami Dolphins will place quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least four weeks, according to ESPN and NFL Network.

Tagovailoa suffered a concussion during the Dolphins’ 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. Tagovailoa was running for a first down when he collided head first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin in the third quarter. He walked off the field under his own power but was ruled out immediately.

The earliest Tagovailoa can return this year will be Oct. 27.

This is at least the third concussion Tagovailoa has sustained during his time in the NFL. He had two during the 2022 season — one in Week 4 and another in Week 16 — which caused him to miss four games. He was also suspected of having another concussion in Week 3 of that season, a controversy that led to the league revamping its concussion protocol. The concussion Tagovailoa suffered in Week 16 was not diagnosed until the day after the game.

Tagovailoa, 26, played in all 17 games for Miami last season and led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards. The fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft, Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212 million deal with the Dolphins in August, including $167 million guaranteed.

Miami will reportedly sign former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley this week. Third-year player Skylar Thompson is expected to start in Tagovailoa’s absence.

The Dolphins’ next game is Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
