WASHINGTON — Former president and current Republican candidate Donald Trump has issued a statement following President Joe Biden's decision to end his reelection bid.
In a Sunday post on his social media platform Truth Social, the Republican presidential nominee said Biden was "not fit to run for President."
"Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve - And never was!" Trump said in his post. "All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t."
"We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly," Trump added before concluding with "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
After losing to Biden in 2020, the two were set for a rematch in the November general election.
Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the 2024 race following a disastrous debate with Trump on June 27. The debate raised concerns about the 81-year-old's fitness for office just four months before the election.
Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take on Trump shortly after his announcement, and encouraged his party to unite behind her.
The president's decision came as he has been isolating at his Delaware beach house after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, huddling with a shrinking circle of close confidants and family members about his political future.
