CATLETT, Va. — Virginia State Police were looking for the two cars involved in a hit and run that killed a man crossing a road in Fauquier County on Friday evening.

This hit-and-run happened at around 5:45 p.m. in Catlett, Va. A man was apparently walking across the Elk Run Road portion of Route 806, near the road's intersection with Flippo Lane; when two cars, driving in opposite lanes, crashed into him, killing him.

"An adult male pedestrian was walking eastbound across Route 806 when he was struck by a northbound SUV," Virginia State Police said on Friday. "The pedestrian was then struck by an unknown southbound vehicle. Neither vehicle stopped at the scene."

Elk Run Road is a two-lane highway; one lane goes northbound and one goes southbound. The road runs through the rural Fauqier County town of Catlett, which has a population of under 300 people. Although there was no pedestrian walkway, most of the people who live on Flippo Lane have to walk or drive across Route 806 to access their mailboxes.

State police said they believe the first car involved in the hit-and-run was an older model silver Nissan SUV, from the late 90s or early 2000s. Police said they had limited information about the second car that hit the man. But they believe that both cars were damaged from the deadly hit-and-run.

"The unknown vehicle may have damage to the front end," Virginia State Police said Friday.

As of Saturday night, this crash remained under investigation by state police.
