Fire marshal investigates possible explosive device at Hyattsville home

The item was found by a contractor working on a townhome in the area.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — A contractor doing work on a townhome in Hyattsville discovered a possible explosive device Tuesday afternoon. Police and firefighters responded to the neighborhood to make sure everyone is safe.

Hyattsville Police and the Prince George's County Fire Marshal responded to the home in the 5700 block of 31st Place just before 2 p.m. Police set up a perimeter around the house and evacuated the homeowner. 

Those who live nearby should avoid the area while the investigation is underway. Police and firefighters have not offered additional details about what was found. As we gather more information we will update this story.

We are on the scene of a possible explosive device in the 5700 block of 31st Place. The item was found by a contractor working at the townhouse doing landscaping work. The PG Fire Marshal is responding. A perimeter is set up around the backyard. Homeowner has been evacuated.
