From "When Harry Met Sally" To "Red, White & Royal Blue" – Non-Rom-Com Lovers Are Sharing The Movies That Won Them Over, And I Can See Why

"My parents convinced me to watch When Harry Met Sally, and it remains one of my comfort movies three years later."

Look, not everyone loves rom-coms. Everyone has their own personal choice of genres and movies, and who are we to judge them? But there are some rom-coms that can grasp the hearts of even the most stringent rom-com avoiders.

Here are 11 rom-coms that won over watchers who don't usually enjoy them:

1. When Harry Met Sally...

Columbia Pictures

"I usually avoid rom-coms. I prefer mysteries and thrillers, as well as other similar genres. However, my parents convinced me to watch When Harry Met Sally, and it remains one of my comfort movies three years later."

2. Red, White & Royal Blue

Amazon Prime Video

"I've always ignored rom-coms – I found them incredibly formulaic and none of them ever really made me feel anything, until now. I don't know what it was but their relationship really struck a chord with me, and it was really quite beautiful."

3. 10 Things I Hate About You

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"I absolutely cannot stand romance movies. I've only ever liked the enemies-to-lovers trope in romance but there is an absolutely HUGE dearth of good movies that fit the trope.

Most of them are almost always with the main couple secretly in love but using ridiculously uninteresting banter to cover it up. But 10 Things I Hate About You grabbed my heart and didn't let it go. It gave me just the right kind of emotional rollercoaster I was looking for and it's been one of my all-time favourites ever since."

4. Crazy Rich Asians

Warner Bros. Pictures

"I’m not a rom-com girly at all, I usually stay clear of movies centred on romance, but I LOVED Crazy Rich Asians!"

5. P.S. I Love You

Summit Entertainment

"I cannot stand tear-jerkers or rom-coms but I will watch P.S. I Love You every time I see it on. I adore that movie."

6. Breakfast At Tiffany's

7. Set It Up

Netflix

"I have always avoided romantic comedies. They make me cringe because most storylines are so predictable. However, I love Set It Up on Netflix starring Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell. Their chemistry is so good."

8. Rosaline

Disney+

"I'm not a major fan of period romance, but Rosaline was so funny I loved it! Maybe that's because it's a bit of a parody but still!"

9. 50 First Dates

Sony Pictures Releasing

"I'm never really in the mood for a rom-com, and I never really liked Adam Sandler movies, but my sister made me watch this movie when it came out and I absolutely loved it. I can't listen to 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' without tearing up and picturing him on the boat. I get that the premise is kinda creepy, but as was every movie in the 2000s. I went from a rom-com hater to a rom-com believer in the space of an hour and a half."

10. Rye Lane

Searchlight Pictures

"It completely changed my mind about not only rom-coms, but romance in general (look, I really get into films, okay?). I was really worried that Yas would fall into the manic-pixie-dream-girl trope, but I loved how vulnerable and complicated she turned out to be – she had interiority and difficulties too, which we usually only see in the male lead in movies."

11. The Proposal

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

"One that randomly stuck with me, despite not really engaging with rom-coms as a kid was The Proposal. I can't even really tell you why, I just really enjoyed the chemistry of Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds – it became a bit of a guilty hangover movie when I was at uni."
