Get out and vote: DC employees get paid leave to make their voices heard

In case you didn't know, your DC employer is required by law to let you vote on Tuesday while getting paid. Here are the stipulations.

WASHINGTON — Happy Election Day, D.C.! It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for — time to flex those civic muscles and make your voice heard at the polls. On Tuesday, you have the chance to shape the future of your community, and thanks to a local law, employees in the District can do so without missing a beat at work.

That’s right. Under D.C. law, employees are entitled to take up to two hours of paid leave to cast their votes. All you need to do is provide reasonable notice to your employer, and you’re good to go. This means you can hit the polls, enjoy the fresh air, and participate in one of our greatest democratic traditions without worrying about losing out on those precious work hours.

Why This Matters

Voting is not just a right; it’s a powerful way to express your opinions and impact the world around you. Every vote counts, and your participation can make a difference in local, state, and national elections.

How to Use Your Paid Leave

  1. Plan Ahead: Give your employer reasonable notice that you’ll be needing some time off to vote. A quick email or chat will do the trick.

  2. Get Informed: Make sure you know where your polling station is and what time it’s open. You don’t want to miss out on your chance to make your voice heard.

  3. Vote with Confidence: Take a deep breath, walk into that voting booth, and know that you’re participating in something monumental. Your vote matters.

Let’s Make Today Count

As you get ready to head out and vote, keep in mind that your participation matters. In D.C., every voice counts, and Election Day is our chance to make a real impact. Grab your friends, make a plan to vote, and let’s make this Election Day a step forward for our community.
