Greta Gerwig Revealed How She Feels About The Conservative "Barbie" Backlash

In an interview with the New York Times, the Barbie director clarified if she'd anticipated this reaction.

Namely, the film has drawn ire from some conservative moviegoers. According to HuffPost, pundits Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk, Republican senator Ted Cruz, and Ginger Gaetz (who is married to Republican congressman Matt Gaetz) are among the voices critiquing the film.

These reactions have reached Barbie director Greta Gerwig. In an interview with the New York Times following the film's release, Greta addressed the right-wing responses.

When asked if she anticipated "the degree" to which conservatives have critiqued the film for being "woke" to the point that some have even burned Barbie dolls, Greta said she did not have this expectation.

"No, I didn’t," she told the publication. "Certainly, there’s a lot of passion."

Greta then went on to explain her wish for how the film will be received. "My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men," she said.

"I hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people," she continued before the conversation moved on to other topics related to the film.
