Humidity combined with highs in the 90s will bring sweltering heat on Friday, and part of Saturday.
WASHINGTON — Under a relentless sun, Friday promises to deliver searing heat across the DMV, with temperatures soaring to potentially hazardous levels of 105 to 112 degrees. As communities prepare for one of the hottest days in recent memory, authorities urge caution amid fears of heat-related illnesses and strain on essential services.
What:
Intense heat Friday. Heat Index 100 to 109.
When:
Now until 8 p.m.
Impact:
Heat related illnesses are possible. Outdoor activities may need to be limited.
Need to know:
Stay hydrated and try to take cooling breaks with air conditioning if you are going to be outdoors. Sun glasses and sunscreen are a must.
Stepping outside in D.C. on Friday, the humidity instantly hits you. It's so muggy outside that it feels downright swampy. It's that type of humidity, combined with highs in the 90s, that will send the heat index soaring to the triple digits. Highs will top out between 91 and 100 degrees, but the heat index will make it feel as hot as 105 degrees to 109 degrees across the D.C. area.
Most the DMV is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Areas such as Charles, St. Mary's,
Stafford, Spotsylvania and King George Counties are under an excessive heat warning until 8 p.m. The heat index could reach up to 112 degrees in those areas.
In such weather, the risk of heat-related illness increases as your body struggles harder to regulate its temperature. Normally, sweat evaporates to cool us down, but with temperatures soaring into the 90s and high humidity, this natural cooling process slows, prolonging the sensation of intense heat.
The heat index on Saturday will also feel like it's between 100 and 105.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Irritability
- Thirst
- Heavy sweating
- Elevated body temperature
- Decreased urine output
