1 year ago 4

"God, he looks like such a good kisser!"

Recently, I asked the BuzzFeed Community about their favourite kissing scenes of all time. What they might not have expected is, I'm gonna watch and rank the best submissions we received!

NBC

So, let's get into it! For this part one, we'll be ranking the best ever kissing scenes from MOVIES.

17. French Kiss – Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan

20th Century Fox

"It's a criminally underrated romcom."

— kathrynvankirk

"He passionately grasps the sides of her dress as they kiss, they slowly pull apart and then walk away holding hands, never breaking contact. Their body language spoke volumes!

My thoughts: I don't think anyone could deny this is a capably performed kiss. The grasping of her dress is a nice touch, and the setting and music is definitely romantic. It's tricky cos I don't know this film, so I've got no idea what precedes this scene. In and of itself, it's just fine. I'll be honest, I'm slightly prejudiced against this because neither of them are very attractive to me, sorry. I'll definitely give this a watch though! 3/10

16. The Princess Bride – Cary Elwes and Robin Wright

20th Century Fox

"You bunch of heathens. There is only ONE kiss that tops every list."

— drakenightfire

Here's the scene in question:

My thoughts: Don't hate me, but this is just a kiss to me. I haven't seen The Princess Bride in years, and this kiss certainly hasn't stuck in my mind. The frame story with the old man and the boy is cute, but the kiss doesn't set my world on fire. I might need a rewatch, but for now, it's a bit meh to me. 4/10

15. Spider-Man – Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst

Sony Pictures Releasing

"The upside-down kiss from the 2002 Spider-Man is one of the MOST iconic kisses in film."

My thoughts: It's ironic that even though this is probably one of the most iconic kisses in modern cinema history, it was apparently awful to film, and both actors really struggled to get it done! The kiss starts off well, and there's something sexy about it, especially in the fact that Mary-Jane is in control and Peter has to hang there and submit.

However, when it cuts to the side THE WAY I LAUGHED OUT LOUD. This man's chin is IN this woman's face, it looks so weird rubbing against her nose. Why didn't zoom out a bit? So... Iconic? Yes. Good? Not so sure. 4.5/10

14. Practical Magic – Sandra Bullock and Mark Feuerstein

Warner Bros.

"I just love when Sally runs into town to find Michael and jumps into his arms to 'This Kiss' by Faith Hill. I know he's not endgame, but that scene is top tier romantic to me."

— shmoopsie

Here's the scene for ya:

My thoughts: There's a certain something to this, and my God does Sandra look beautiful! I like how happy to see each other they are and the jump is great, but I kinda wish they'd pulled the camera back to see her in his arms. The other thing is, as soon as she's up there, Sandra's glorious hair sort of swamps him and you can't see anything. I understand the significance of this scene to the plot, and the music works super well, but the kiss by itself isn't super strong. It's mainly about that jump, I think! 5/10

13. The Holiday – Cameron Diaz and Jude Law

Sony Pictures Releasing

"Each and every time. Swoon."

— 5under

My thoughts: So this person has been cheeky and said every kiss, but I'm going to have whittle that down to just one scene, I'm afraid... So, I'll go with the first kiss between these two – the one with the eyelid stuff. Obviously, what's exciting about this scene is their instant chemistry and the spontaneity of it all. It's a very good kiss between two very good-looking people! What's not to love? 6/10

12. First Knight – Richard Gere and Julia Ormond

Sony Pictures Releasing

"This is an oldie but goodie! I remember being young and watching with my mom, and she said, 'now THAT is how you kiss someone'. I agree, and to this day, I have not been kissed like that. Where's my knight???"

— twoh7

My thoughts: So, I don't know this film, but I'm totally buying into their love... They're so sad to be parting! The kiss is excellent, it makes sense why Richard really was the heartthrob of his generation. Very passion, much romance. The way they turn to face Sean when he enters is too comical though – totally kills the vibe. 6.5/10

Also, re the knight – same, girl, same!

11. The Replacements – Keanu Reeves and Brooke Langton

Warner Bros. Pictures

"It's a great scene in a really underrated Keanu Reeves movie."

— michaeldavid

Here's the kiss in question:

My thoughts: Okay, I like this. There are a lot of fun elements – the song, the looks to each other, the game commentary over the top of the actual kiss. I think what I like best is that Annabelle (Brooke) looks so disappointed when Shane (Keanu) leaves, that when he stops and turns around, you're like "yessss!"

The music works really well, but part of me does wish it was more impulsive on Shane's part. I really like the commentary, but he should've rushed back over to kiss her instead of awkwardly shuffling back there. Plus, there are too many looks between each other – it gets a bit comical after four! 7/10

10. Pride & Prejudice – Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen

Universal Pictures

"Darcy and Elizabeth field scene #swoon."

— ek05

My thoughts: This is an interesting submission because there is technically no kiss! The whole scene is very atmospheric, and if you love Austen and the novel this is based on, I can see how you'd be super absorbed by everything going on here. This is sort of the dénouement of the whole story, and it's super well done. I love the music and the lighting and the performances.

I have to say, I personally don't ~love~ Matthew as Darcy, but I adore Keira in this role. I guess what's nice about this scene is it represents the much anticipated softening of Darcy's character, and their union is very sweet. I think, in isolation from the rest of the film, this scene isn't as impactful, but the final frame is pretty stunning. 7/10

9. Penelope – James McAvoy and Christina Ricci

Momentum Pictures

"The best kiss I've ever seen in a movie."

— grannyshirt

"God, he looks like such a good kisser! I wanted to be Christina Ricci so bad when I watched that moment. Woof."

My thoughts: The pig mask does take me out of this a bit, but I get why she's wearing it. Besides that, this is a very good scene and I totally agree that James looks like a good kisser – he's just enthusiastic enough and his hands go to all the right places. We love a good grab before a kiss too – muy sensual!! 7.5/10

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End – Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"Will and Elizabeth's wedding kiss. The rain, the chaos around them, the music... Cinematic romance right there."

— sunflowersugar

My thoughts: God, so much nostalgia in this movie! I don't remember this scene, but I obviously watched these films. This is a very different entry to the rest on this list, but it's pretty great, honestly. There's comedy, action, and romance all in one scene here, and the kiss itself is fab. Who knew two incredibly beautiful people performing a choreographed kiss would be so great? I do wish he'd kissed her the first time though – that was a great dip by him. 7.5/10

7. Maurice – James Wilby and Rupert Graves

Enterprise Pictures Limited

"I love when Maurice goes to find Alec at the boathouse and pulls him up into a passionate kiss. Alec then says, 'now we shan't never be parted'.

Fun fact: E.M. Forster didn't allow the book this film is based on to be published until after his death. At the time he wrote it, homosexual relationships were still a criminal offence in England, and some of the aspects of the book are likely based on Forster's own life."

My thoughts: I really like this movie, and as a piece of film, it's certainly not afraid to explore gay love and the male form, which is great! This is a very loving exchange with a great intense look in the middle of the kissing, but it still has urgency and passion. Plus, Rupert Graves is also sooooo dreamy. The accent is a lot though (and I'm from Somerset, so I'm supposed to be used to it!) 8/10

6. A Cinderella Story – Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray

Warner Bros. Pictures

"I'm throwing it out there! You know the scene where Austin realises he's in love with Sam and then runs up the bleachers. They have this full-on make out session as rain falls and "Hear You Me" by Jimmy Eat World plays. It's a masterpiece!"

— msjsa

The lovely rainy kiss:

My thoughts: Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this film, but I don't know that these two have amazinggg chemistry. I've always felt that they look too similar – like, that's a lot of blonde for one couple. That being said, I think this scene being as great as it is comes down to a combination of several things.

The rain, the drama, a nostalgic and exciting incarnation of American high school life, and a FANTASTIC song. The kiss is good, and they are both beautiful people, but it's all of those things together that make it so brilliant. Plus, they ended a drought! 8.5/10

5. The Notebook – Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams

New Line Cinema

"Noah and Ally when they kiss in the rain, OMG."

— emmielou1025

More rainy kissing:

My thoughts: So, I've obviously heard of this kiss, and I watched the movie many moons ago! You can tell how fraught with emotion this moment is, and I do like that sort of open mouth thing Rachel does before Ryan kisses her. You can tell A LOT has been leading up to this kiss – things unsaid and un-realised. It's also suuuuuper atmospheric with the rain. Probably a textbook romantic movie kiss if there ever was one, which, I guess, is why they stuck it on the film poster! 8.5/10

4. Carol – Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara

StudioCanal

"The New Year's Eve kiss that the audience had been waiting for the whole film! It was beautiful and moving."

My thoughts: This is a fantastic film, and I remember a lot had been leading up to this moment! I love how they connect emotionally just before the kiss, and that there is (understandably) so much tension in the air before it happens. The kiss itself is just great – super well shot and incredibly romantic. It's just a little bit too restrained, I think. 9/10

3. 10 Things I Hate About You – Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"It's gotta be the paintball kiss!"

— aaandieee

Kissing antics this way:

My thoughts: It's hard to ignore the context of this scene, but in and of itself, it's very cute and there are lots of great elements that make it a pretty awesome kiss. Most of these can be attributed to Heath's performance, honestly. We're talking the way he throws Julia down, the way he flings off his goggles, the way their arms wrap around each other. Who doesn't wanna be kissed like that? 9.5/10

2. Girl Next Door – Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert

20th Century Fox

"I love the first kiss when they're at a party together. Their chemistry is off the charts! The first time I saw it, I felt these swooping butterflies in my own tummy. It's a hell of a kiss. I never see this one mentioned, and I don't understand why."

My thoughts: Okay, yes, this is one heck of a kiss. I remember the sexual tension in this movie being off the charts pretty much all the way through, but this kiss is just great. It helps that both Emile and Elisha are so beautiful, but I do love the way he rushes in and cuts up that guy to get to her. They connect so seamlessly, and they both look great together. Great song choice too! 9.5/10

1. Brokeback Mountain – Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal

Focus Features

"It has to be! The passion fraught with fear, the anticipation fraught with self-loathing. It's sad and gorgeous at the same time. It also doesn't hurt that Jake and Heath are bloody stunning."

My thoughts: Ugh, YES. From the moment Ennis smiles out of the window to when he reluctantly retreats back inside, this scene is perfect. The unbridled passion and sheer aggression of this reunion is all you could want and more! It's so well acted, in particular by the late Heath Ledger. I love how Jack loses his hat and they both struggle to stop themselves. It's just a shame that poor Alma sees them. 10/10
