Here's Why Jane Fonda Threw A Scroll At An Award-Winning Director At Cannes

1 year ago 5

If Jane Fonda threw a scroll at me, I’d welcome it. I’d view it as an anointing of sorts. A religious experience, honestly.

On Friday, the legendary activist and two-time Oscar-winning actor attended the Cannes Film Festival to present the festivals most significant prize: the Palme d’Or.

This year’s winner was Anatomy of a Fall, and the film’s director Justine Triet took the stage to accept her award from Jane.

After Justine give her acceptance speech, the director walked away from the podium with her award in tow. You know, as is commonplace for winners at awards ceremonies.

But here’s where things went unexpectedly. Justine seemed to unknowingly have left a scroll that accompanied her award on the podium.

This prompted Jane to grab the scroll and try to get the director’s attention. However, with Triet’s back to Jane, the actor decided to throw the scroll at her, though Triet was unaware of this too and another person on stage picked it up and handed it to her.

Don’t worry, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between the two women. Because they promptly posed together after Justine's acceptance speech. Yes, Justine had her award and scroll in hand.

All this to say, congrats are in order for Justine. Anatomy of a Fall, which follows a woman who tries to prove her innocence after her husband mysteriously dies in the snow, was picked up by Neon for North American distribution; however, a stateside release date has not yet been announced.
