"I Have Watched It At Least Once A Week Since It Came Out" – 18 Films People Say Are Truly Terrible But We Love Them Anyway

"It's so cheesy, but I just can't help but love it."

We all have those movies that hold a special place in our hearts, no matter how many people drag them through the mud. Whether they've been slammed by critics, or just poorly received by viewers, there are some "bad" films that we love anyway.

Here are 18 "bad" films that we'll always stand by...

1. National Treasure

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"It's my absolute favourite film! It gets shit on so badly, but I've watched it at least once a week since it came out, and will love love it for the rest of my life. Also, Sean Bean DOESN'T die in it, so that's enough of a reason for it to be amazing."

2. Ghostbusters II

Columbia Pictures

"It's just as fun, ridiculous, and quotable as the original, and it makes me smile whenever I watch it. I don't want to meet the people who refuse to appreciate rivers of pink slime that morph into bathtubs and toasters to pop with musical rhythm, or Vigo the Carpathian with his master plan to possess a baby. I don't CARE if it doesn't make sense! They took the Statue of freaking Liberty for a stroll. Who else you gonna call? HE-man??"

3. Masters of the Universe

The Cannon Group, Inc

"Every critic tells us that the live-action Masters of the Universe film with Dolph Lundgren was terrible. I'm 37 now, and I've never met anyone my age who didn't love that movie as a kid. It still holds a soft spot in my heart thanks to its '80s/'90s charm."

4. Waterworld

Universal Pictures

"I feel the behind-the-scenes drama overshadowed this film somewhat, but at its heart, it's a fun high-concept dystopian action film. Bootlegs of an extended three-hour cut circulated amongst fans for years before it was finally officially released on special edition Blu-ray.

Few other 'terrible' films can boast a fan-demanded extended cut two decades after the fact! I actually wouldn't mind seeing a reboot/sequel, as there are plenty more stories that could be told within that world."

5. Total Recall (1990)

TriStar Pictures

6. Downsizing

Paramount Pictures

"Everyone slams this film, and I agree the ending is kind of weird, but I've still seen it probably 10 times."

7. Ghostbusters (2016)

Sony Pictures Releasing

"It is my all-time favourite movie. I know it's not the best movie ever, but it surely didn't deserve all the hate it gets. It always cheers me up."

8. Sucker Punch

Warner Bros. Pictures

"It's Zack Snyder misunderstood masterpiece! The action is incredibly stylish in each of Babydoll's dream sequences, the triple-layered reality is a great way to subvert expectations, and there are loads of cool quotes and heartfelt messages."

9. Son of the Mask

New Line Cinema

"It has to be Son of the Mask. I watched it when I was younger and it was the funniest thing to an 11-year-old me. I still have a soft spot for it."

10. The Great Gatsby (2013)

Warner Bros. Pictures

"It doesn't get hate exactly, it just doesn't get enough love, IMHO. Getting the overarching themes in the book to come across on the big screen is a monumental task. Baz Luhrmann managed to get the basics right – the excess, the consumerism, the tragedy of the lost dream. It's not perfect, but it's my favourite movie of all time, and it led me to my favourite book of all time."

11. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

20th Century Fox

"Honestly, I don't know what everyone's problem is with it. It's visually very cool, and there are some camp alien monsters. What's not to love?"

12. Batman & Robin (1997)

Warner Bros.

"It's so cheesy, but I just can't help but love it."

13. Suicide Squad (2016)

Warner Bros.

"Sure, the plot isn't the best, but the characters are fun and I thought the actors did a really good job. I'd still put it ahead of most of the DC movies that have come out in the last decade."

14. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Paramount Pictures

"I love it – especially the giant ants scene and the quicksand! The acting is very good, and it's way better than most people say it is."

15. Grease 2

Paramount Pictures

"The acting is much better than in the first film, and the songs are a lot better too. Also, Stephanie is portrayed as a strong female character, unlike Sandy. Grease 2 is 1000% better than the original."

16. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

20th Century Studios

"I had SO much fun with this film. I loved the character of Poppy as a villain; the idea of a sweet lady who bakes pies being this huge drugs kingpin is brilliant. The action was still absolutely amazing. The OTT spy silliness – like the magic gel stopping people from dying – worked well too. It's so much fun.

I will say I HATED the 'mucous membrane' scene, but at the same time, when have spy movies ever acknowledged the idea of honeypotting being cheating?"

17. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Sony Pictures Releasing

"Yes it's flawed, but I had a ton of fun watching it, and this movie has given us the most accurate on-screen portrayal of Spider-Man to date."

18. Twilight

Summit Entertainment

"People really dragged it for few years after it came out – probably because it sits in the romance genre and has a lot of female fans, and misogyny is alive and well – but I LOVE this movie. It's so well made and has interesting stylistic choices, engaging performances, GREAT music, iconic costumes, and this indie aesthetic that just works."
