Family says 2-year-old Emily is doing better after being shot twice this Summer, they're hoping more arrests will come in this case that injured her and killed 2.
WASHINGTON — A 25-year-old man is facing murder charges for a summer shooting that killed two people, after D.C. police spent the last few months trying to track down the suspects.
On Thursday, the family of a 1-year-old who was shot while caught in the crossfire of a shooting reacted to the news.
"Grateful, grateful, grateful,” grandmother Priscilla Johns said. “I ask for prayers, and I thank God for that, and I thank God for you guys to keep pushing what you guys do."
Praise and worship from the family of 2-year-old Emily after an arrest was made in this case.
WUSA9 was actually the ones to break the news to the family. Family members immediately praised God after we told them one person is now facing charges in her shooting.
"I'm grateful for the police, the detective and everybody who helped out on this case,” Johns said.
"I thank the community for reaching out, for saying something."
The toddler was shot in the stomach and arm. She was caught in the crossfire with her daycare class at the intersection of 22nd street and Alabama Ave in Southeast in July.
Daycare workers tried to shield the kids from bullets when gunshots rang out just after 11 a.m.
Two men -- 29-year-old Lamont Street and 50-year-old Jermaine Proctor were killed. WUSA 9 reached out to the family of the victims, but they are not ready to talk and were still processing what happened.
Another man was also injured. Now 25-year-old Andre Greene is facing murder charges.
"Greene was charged with first degree for his role in this shooting. We would like to thank the community,” MPD Criminal Investigation Division Captain Jeffery Wade said. “We know the brazenness we know the suspect of this case shot the community and we appreciate their cooperation with the investigation,"
Thursday Emily's grandmother Priscilla Johns gave an update on how she's doing and provided these pictures.
"She has tremors or just like shakes or just stares at times but overall she's still here and I'm grateful,” Johns said. “We will deal with the shakes and everything that comes with it and the therapist, she's in therapy."
She says she's doing great overall and is now homeschooling. Her mother doesn't feel comfortable with her going back to the daycare.
"Keep praying and hopefully we get through it,” mother Precious Johns said.
"We will, you already know God is God by himself,” Priscilla Johns said.
As far as a motive, DC Police say it’s still unclear, but they do believe there are several other suspects.
Police and the family are calling for people to speak up.
"I know there will be more arrest in this case and I'm asking them to turn yourself in,” Priscilla Johns said. “I forgive you -- believe it or not I been forgave you."
There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
