"I'm Pretty Sure This Is It": Marvel's "Secret Invasion" Seemingly Killed A Beloved MCU Character And It's Devastating

🚨 There are obviously MASSIVE spoilers ahead for Marvel's Secret Invasion Episode 1! 🚨

Marvel's Secret Invasion, the MCU's first TV series in Phase 5, just premiered and oh my god are we off to a chaotic start.

Set in the present-day MCU, Secret Invasion follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who has learned about a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls.

Fury joins forces with Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who has been living on Earth, as they race to stop the imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

The series marks the first MCU show since She-Hulk: Attorney at Law in 2022 and is one of the more "traditional drama" series we've gotten so far.

While Secret Invasion introduces a bunch of new actors, like Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also marks the return of some beloved characters, like Maria Hill and Nick Fury.

The first episode does a great job at setting up the stakes for the series, with Hill and Fury trying to hunt down a threat, namely Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), a leader of a group of rebel Skrulls.

This takes Fury and Hill to Moscow where, in the final minutes of Episode 1, Gravik sets off a bunch of explosions and then disguises himself as Fury and SHOOTS Hill.

Now, at this point I was like, "OH MY GOD WHAT?!" But secretly thinking that this wasn't Maria but was actually a Skrull-version of her...but nope...it's not looking like that.

What's even worse is Maria seemingly dies thinking Fury shot her?! When I tell you I was screaming and crying.

And I'm not the only one, Marvel fans flocked to Twitter after the first Secret Invasion episode to talk about how devastating it is that Maria was seemingly (lol I am gonna live in denial forever) killed:

Sif and Maria Hill are funny in the way that both of them have been MIA for years and people got so excited when they finally were announced for a new project that ended up wasting both of them

both are underutilized characters whose only moment to shine was in Agents of SHIELD pic.twitter.com/i5DUCGdCTr

And while I'm happy over here in my little "Maria Hill is not really dead I will believe it never" bubble, it looks like this could really be the end of Cobie's journey in the MCU.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Cobie opened up about her character's tragic fate, saying, "There is a multiverse now, so anything is possible. But I’m pretty sure this is it."

"It felt and it feels strange," she continued. "Maria Hill’s passing is very real, and it's shocking, and it feels very human. It was a sad day."

Cobie made her first appearance as Maria Hill 11 years ago in The Avengers in 2012. Since then, she's appeared in countless Marvel movies, often being the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the corner (and Fury's No. 2) while The Avengers run around.

When asked if this marks her last appearance in the MCU — there are rumors she is featured in the upcoming movie The Marvels — Cobie referenced the multiverse and said, "I mean, I didn’t know I was an alien in Spider-Man [Far From Home]."

She continued, telling Vanity Fair, "I mean, listen, it would’ve been great [to continue as Maria]. Of course I would’ve loved to do more, but I trust that Marvel is doing the storyline that they think is best."

Like every Marvel project, Cobie said they were worried the big death would leak, so much so that the script wasn't even printed out, according to Vanity Fair. Cobie's final scene as Maria was her death scene.

"To have Fury see himself, to know that Hill thinks that Fury shot her — that’s the pain of that moment," she explained. "I like to think that she, by the time she passed, knew it wasn’t him. Initially, it’s terrifying and so confusing. But I’d like to think she got there."

Welp, I will be over here in my little denial world hoping to god that Cobie has been so well-trained by Marvel — and better at lying than Tom Holland or Andrew Garfield — that this isn't really the end of Maria Hill.
