"I Thought She Was Badass, Turns Out She Was Just An Ass" People Are Sharing The TV Characters They Used To Love But Later Discovered Were Actually The Worst

1 year ago 8

The writers really dropped the ball with these ones.

Recently, we asked the members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which TV characters they used to love but ended up hating as the series went on. Many grievances were aired, and here are 24 of them:

1. Amy Santiago — Brooklyn 99

NBC / Via giphy.com

"She was an adorable nerd in the first four seasons, but then she became an insufferable know-it-all suckup. She pressured her husband into making things her way (like having kids) and even spied in on his therapy sessions because of some stupid game."

2. Serena van der Woodsen — Gossip Girl

The CW / Via giphy.com

"She started out like she was actually trying to change, yet she gradually just became worse."

3. Fez — That 70's Show

FOX / Via giphy.com

"He was a cute, awkward, nerdy virgin at the beginning of the show that ended up just turning into this creepy incel and a one-note racist caricature. Not to mention the end of the series having that awkward Jackie/Fez endgame since Donna was with Eric. Gross."

4. Fiona Gallagher — Shameless (US)

Showtime / Via giphy.com

"She was the best and was granted custody of Liam, and then immediately became irresponsible and just left him."

5. Martin — Martin

FOX / HBO Max / Via giphy.com

"I hadn't watched the show in a while so when I found it again, I was excited because I used to love it and thought Martin was really funny. However, the more I watched it the more I just hoped Gina would run away from him. I literally just couldn't watch it anymore unless Pam was in an episode."

6. Piper Chapman — Orange is the New Black

Netflix / Via giphy.com

"She started off being sort of interesting and then just became whiny and entitled, with absolutely no growth or character development. Compared to the other characters she was so bland."

7. Eleven — Stranger Things

Netflix / Via giphy.com

"I loved her weird girl energy and X-men-esque storyline in the beginning. But the more they forced and focused on her relationship with Mike the less I liked her – she felt like a totally different character."

8. JD — Scrubs

NBC / Hulu / Via giphy.com

"He started out as an everyman with kooky qualities but after a few seasons, the character lost all the relatable qualities and became just kooky. It didn't help that around the same time, Zach Braff lost his poker face and gained this sort of self-satisfied aura that helped make the character lose all its charm. You could just tell that he thought he was being hilarious, and unfortunately, that made everything significantly less funny."

9. Dam Humphrey — Gossip Girl

The CW / Via giphy.com

"I loved how he was the loner who fell in love with the popular girl. But after he confessed and wrote the book about Gossip Girl, my love for him vanished. Like, how could he do that to his friends? Especially to Nate who was his best friend."

10. Phoebe Buffay — Friends

NBC / Via giphy.com

"She used to be so fun — a bit spacey, but always there for her friends. I adored her. Then, at some point, the writers decided it was more fun for her to yell at people all the time and she became such a horrible person to everyone around her. It got to the point where I had to wonder why anyone was still friends with her beyond 'the plot saying so'."

11. Dr. Miranda Bailey — Grey's Anatomy

ABC / Via giphy.com

"I loved her so much in the early seasons, she had this cold exterior but on the inside – she deeply cared for all the interns. The writers completely ruined her when she became chief. She just became rude and jealous, and the way she treated Meredith in season 18, in particular, was so unforgivable."

ashley1246

12. Linda Belcher — Bob's Burgers

FOX / Hulu / Via giphy.com

"In the beginning, she was an endearingly enthusiastic mom, loved her kids, and went to the end of the Earth for her family, while still maintaining her boundaries. I can't STAND her in recent seasons. Her overbearing nature has taken front and centre. She enables all the other characters' worst qualities, but the show passes it off as her support or love for them. I find most episodes exhausting to watch now because of her."

sunflowersugar

13. Carolyn Martens — Killing Eve

BBC / Via giphy.com

"Originally, I thought she was a badass, but it turns out she's kinda just an ass."

sarahbird

14. Nancy Botwin — Weeds

Showtime / Via giphy.com

"I respected her desperate hustle, but the show hit a point where Nancy becomes an insufferable sociopath and narcissist. It ruined the show for me. All these years later, and I still haven't finished the show or started a rewatch."

barbie-girl

15. Mindy Lahiri — The Mindy Project

FOX / Via giphy.com

"The more the character leaned into her narcissism without facing consequences, the less I liked her. The rest of the ensemble, by the end, was far more interesting than her character."

filmteach

16. Sabrina Spellman — Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Netflix / Via giphy.com

"At first, she was amazing, but she lost me when she started to believe the world revolves around her because she's 'the chosen one'. From demanding to be the head boy at the school (despite not knowing pretty much anything about their history) to demanding to be both the 'Queen of Hell' AND a normal cheerleader – she just got so bratty and annoying. She just screwed around with everyone's lives because she felt her way was always better."

17. Glenn Sturgis — Superstore

NBC / Via giphy.com

"At first I thought of him as just well-intentioned, but then I couldn’t stand him after he made Amy feel like she was a bad mom because she has to work full time. And when he got a pastor to preach at the store, even when Amy said no, and then threw a tantrum — I was done."

eatmyloafersdebbie

18. Jessica Day — New Girl

FOX / Via giphy.com

"I rewatched the series last year and it got to the point that I literally turned to the internet and Googled 'Why is Jess from New Girl so effing annoying?'. Every season the whole 'I'm so quirky! I'm going to make situations so much worse because I'm just a cute, weird girl!' act just gets more unbearable. She's the worst."

melyndasnyder

19. Tyrion Lannister — Game of Thrones

HBO / Via giphy.com

"This was an extremely smart man, completely adept at playing the game. Then he killed his lover, father, and ran to Essos. After that, he made one terrible mistake after another — getting into a war while Daenerys was away, trusting his sister whom he knew couldn't be trusted, giving bad advice out left and right, and finally declaring Bran the best candidate for King. Ugh!"

rebeccav11

20. Rory Gilmore — Gilmore Girls

The CW / Via giphy.com

"In the first three seasons, I think she was great – except for how she treated Dean, and let herself be treated by Jess. Overall, she started off as a smart girl who was determined to reach her goals. But when Logan's father told her she doesn't have what it takes to become a journalist, she became insufferable. The most annoying part was that she really tried to convince herself that dropping out of Yale and living in her grandparent's poolhouse was a good move."

21. Andy Bernard — The Office (US)

NBC / Peacock / Via giphy.com

"He started out as a goof but progressively turned into a complete dick. He's one of the big reasons why I don't really like the episodes after Steve Carell left."

flyerboy6

22. Cassie Howard – Euphoria

HBO / Via giphy.com

"I sympathised with everything she went through — from her dad abandoning her to men sexualising and slut-shaming her. But it all went down the drain when she misused those traumas and decided to pursue Nate. She turned into a sadist who seemed to enjoy abusing Maddy and Lexi for no other reason than her own sick kicks."

tanyam44ab2253d

23. Jim Halpert — The Office (US)

NBC / Peacock / Via giphy.com

"After watching and rewatching the show so many times (and I love it still as much as the first time), I’ve really started to notice that he’s not fun, he's actually just a bit of a pain in the ass."

jadey1

24. Ted Mosby — How I Met Your Mother

CBS / Hulu / Via giphy.com

"When I first watched the series I was really rooting for him, but then I got older and started to notice all the love-bombing he does. It's not even just towards Robin, it's almost every woman he dated. And he always sees himself as a hero when really, he is the true bad guy in the story. A no means no."
