If you're following the Barbie movie promo, you'll know that the marketing team are putting some serious brain power (and dollar) into its ad campaign.

So, we thought we'd share some of the most extravagant movie marketing campaigns throughout history. Here are just a few:

1. Deadpool created fake Tinder profiles, replaced movie posters in stores, made customised emojis... I could go on (and I will).

2. The Simpsons Movie created some real-life Kwik-E Marts in the lead-up to the premiere.

3. Toy Story 3 created a YouTube channel with retro toy ads.

4. Cloverfield ran its marketing campaign with no title or clear trailer.

5. The Blair Witch Project originally pretended all its leads were genuinely missing – even dead.

6. A 1961 movie, Mr Sardonicus, had movie-goers vote on its ending via a "punishment poll" – even though the ending was already selected.

7. Office Space put a man in a plexiglass container above Times Square for five days.

8. Sacha Baron Cohen appeared at the White House gates as Borat to invite then-president Bush to his Borat premiere.

9. Paramount ran a poll for Paranormal Activity asking people if they wanted the movie to be screened in their city.

10. Ex Machina set up a dating profile for its main character (a year before Deadpool).

11. Mission: Impossible III accidentally created a bomb scare.
