Inside the Kamala Harris Fundraiser at The Abbey: Jinkx Monsoon, Kathy Griffin and Coconut Cocktails

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Jinkx Monsoon captured the mood at Thursday night’s A Dance Party for Kamala at the iconic West Hollywood gay bar The Abbey with a simple question for the crowd.

“Doesn’t it feel good right now to have a sliver of hope in these dark fucking times?” she said to applause and cheers.

There were no stump speeches during the event about policies. No politicians were asked to speak to the crowd. Instead, Monsoon was one of only four people who spoke at the three-hour event, joining Jesse Tyler Ferguson on stage followed by Harris national finance committee members Todd Hawkins and Justin Mikita.

Ferguson asked Monsoon what Judy Garland would think of the presidential race. Monsoon, showing off her signature impersonation of the icon, slurred, “I have to say I have a cat and I’m a single mother and I’m America’s fucking sweetheart.”

Doors opened at 8 p.m. with a sign warning that The Abbey would be closed until 11 p.m. for a “private event.” Tickets prices ranged from $25 to attend to $10,000 to be named a co-chair with access to a pre-reception and a reserved table with six seats.

The bar offered Kamala Cocktails, including the $12 Coconut for Kamala, which was a sweet mix of 1800 coconut tequila, muddled mint, fresh lime juice and agave topped with club soda and garnished with mint and lime. Bartenders wore black t-shirts emblazoned with, “The Abbey Is Coconuts for Kamala.”

Bold-faced names spotted in the crowd included Ashley Park, Darren Criss, Colton Underwood and singers Betty Who and Vincint. Influencers included Caleb Marshall (aka The Fitness Marshall), Dexter Mayfield, Haley Jordan and Allison Florea.

Kathy Griffin received some of the loudest applause and laughs as she rushed on staged, stood between Hawkins and Mikita, and growled, “Take my pictuuure!”

And with that, the dance party started with the deejay playing — what else? — Beyoncé’s “Freedom.”
