Jamie Lee Curtis is no longer on X. The Oscar-winning actor announced on Instagram that she’s deactivated her X account, writing in the caption: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference.”
Curtis did not provide a specific reason for leaving X, but her decision comes at a time when organizations such as the Berlin Film Festival and news publications like The Guardian have announced they will stop posting on X due to the rampant toxicity that exists on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform.
The Guardian put out a statement in which it explained its decision to leave X was due to the “often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism.”
“The U.S. presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time: that X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse,” the U.K. news organization added.
Curtis often used her X account to engage with fans and promote her various film and television projects. She was one of the more vocal celebrities on the social media platform, frequently posting about current events like the recent U.S. election. She reacted to Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in a social media statement that said Trump’s win “means a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time.”
“Many fear their rights will be impeded and denied,” Curtis wrote. “Many, minority groups and young people will be afraid. Gay and trans people will be more afraid. We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve. For all those people there will be those who will help you. Me included.”
She concluded, “But what it really means is that we wake up and fight. Fight for women and our children and their futures and fight against tyranny, one day at a time. One fight at a time. One protest at a time. That’s what it means to be an American. That’s what it has always meant and will always mean regardless of the outcome.”
