Madrid – The Hague-based Latin Quarter Entertainment, a sales, co-production and distribution outfit, has acquired U.K. and German theatrical rights to “The Bail” (“La fianza”) from debut Colombian-Spanish director Gonzalo Perdomo. The deal was closed during this year’s Iberseries & Platino Industria market in Madrid.

An official synopsis for the black comedy thriller reads: “After celebrating her daughter’s sixth birthday, Ana receives an unwelcome visit from Walter, a strange man looking for her husband Ricardo, with whom he has unfinished business. What begins as a comfortable visit for Ana ends up becoming a disturbing situation in which she discovers Ricardo’s constant lies and infidelities, as well as the real reason why Walter is in her house: to hold her and her daughter as collateral for Ricardo to close a deal with the dangerous drug organization for which Walter works.”

“‘The Bail’ was born from two very simple premises,” explained Perdomo. “On the one hand, I want to tell the story of a woman who, in order to improve her situation, changes country, culture and life. On the other hand, I set myself the challenge of making a film whose plot shows, in one day and in one location, the struggle and empowerment of this same woman within a world that is completely foreign to her, a world of men.”

Juana Acosta (“Perfect Strangers,” “Anna”) stars as the film’s lead protagonist alongside Julian Roman (“Hasta Que Te Conocí”) and Israel Elejalde (“Madres paralelas”).

Acosta said that she was impressed by Perdomo’s “excellent eye.” She described the project as “a thriller and a black comedy full of entanglements that will give people something to talk about.”

According to Latin Quarter Managing Director Juan G. Castro, his company “had been following Juana Acosta’s career for a long time and we were eager to work with a film that stars her. We are very grateful to Iberseries & Platino Industria for giving us the opportunity to learn about and acquire the latest in Ibero-American production at its annual event, in which we have participated since the first edition.”

“The Bail” will debut in Spain at the end of the year before Latin Quarter takes the film to London and Berlin in first quarter 2025.
