Kyle Chandler is in negotiations for a lead role in the Green Lantern series “Lanterns” at HBO, Variety has confirmed with sources.

Chandler would reportedly play Hal Jordan should he join the series. The will follow Jordan and John Stewart, two members of the Green Lantern Corps. No one is currently attached to play Stewart.

Reps for HBO and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment. Reps for Chandler did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Chandler is the latest high-profile actor to be associated with the series. It was previously reported that Josh Brolin was offered the Hal Jordan role before ultimately passing.

Chandler is perhaps best known for his starring role in the high school football drama “Friday Night Lights,” which aired on NBC for five seasons. He won the Emmy for best actor in a drama series for that show in 2011. Chandler has also starred in shows like “Bloodline” at Netflix and “Early Edition” at CBS. In film, he is known for roles in features like “King Kong,” “Super 8,” “Argo,” and “Manchester by the Sea.”

He is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

“Lanterns” was officially picked up at HBO back in June for eight episodes. Per the logline, new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Chris Mundy will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Damon Lindelof and Tom King will serve as executive producers and co-write “Lanterns” with Mundy. Warner Bros. TV is producing with DC Studios and HBO. The show is based on the DC comic “Green Lantern.”

“Lanterns” is one of several major projects announced under the DC Studios banner, which is run by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The live-action series “The Penguin” starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti recently debuted, while the animated series “Creature Commandos” will debut on Max in December. Gunn is also prepping Season 2 of the DC series “Peacemaker” starring John Cena.

Deadline first reported Chandler being in talks for “Lanterns.”
