WASHINGTON — DC Fire and EMS are actively working to extinguish an apartment fire in Southeast.
Fire and rescue received multiple calls for a large fire along the 2600 block of Bowen Road just before 2 p.m. Tuesday. When officials arrived they could see flames shooting out from the top of the four-story apartment building.
The fire extended across at least three apartment buildings. Fire officials did a sweep of the buildings and located one person on the second floor, according to DC Fire and EMS Spokesperson Vito Maggiolo. By that point, the fire had compromised the stairwell, forcing firefighters to evacuate the person using a ladder.
The person rescued has been taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but is expected to survive. Crews also rescued several pets from the fire.
Flames were so large crews had to attack the fire from the outside before moving inside, where they are currently hitting hot spots.
One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital. They are expected to survive. Two of the three buildings have been condemned, causing quite a few displacements. No word on exactly how many people have been displaced. Crews have not said what they believe to be the cause of this fire.
Road closures have been put in place as crews continue to work on extinguishing the fire. Drivers should avoid the following streets:
- 2500 – 2600 Blocks of Bowen Road, SE between Douglas Road and Howard Road, SE
