The teams are preparing to respond to Tropical Cyclone Helene.

VIRGINIA, USA — As Tropical Cyclone Helene looms over Florida, teams from the DMV area are preparing to spring into action.

Virginia Task Force 1 (VA-TF1), a search and rescue (USAR) team based in Fairfax County, has been activated by FEMA to assist in Florida’s response to the storm. This activation comes as the state braces for potential destruction caused by the cyclone’s high winds and heavy rains.

VA-TF1, comprised of 80 highly-trained personnel and 4 search-and-rescue canines, is scheduled to deploy from Chantilly, Virginia, Tuesday afternoon. The Type 1 team is one of the most comprehensive USAR units in the country, equipped to handle severe disasters, including building collapses, floods, and other life-threatening emergencies. Their primary mission will be to assist in locating and rescuing people trapped in the aftermath of the storm.

Once on the ground in Florida, VA-TF1 will work alongside local first responders and other federal units to conduct search and rescue missions. These operations will likely include rescuing people from flooded areas, collapsed buildings, or those in need of emergency medical attention. The team is expected to deploy with specialized equipment, allowing them to operate in confined spaces and hazardous conditions (critical when responding to large-scale disasters).

VA-TF1, operated by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, is internationally recognized for its experience in disaster response. The task force has responded to some of the most catastrophic events in recent history, including hurricanes, earthquakes, and the 9/11 attacks.

While Floridians prepare for the storm, having teams like VA-TF1 on standby offers some reassurance. They are the first local team to say they are heading out to help.

WUSA9 will update you if and when any more teams are deployed from our area.
