Man dies after accidental fireplace fire in NW DC apartment

The fire was in the Columbia Heights neighborhood on the 1500 block of Ogden Street NW.

WASHINGTON — A man has died after an accidental fire in a Northwest D.C. apartment Tuesday morning.

D.C. Fire responded to a box alarm fire on the 1500 block of Ogden Street NW around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. When they arrived, they found fire showing on the first floor of the building. They were able to extinguish the fire and pulled one person out of the building.

Crews tried to resuscitate the person before he was was transported to a trauma center with critical injuries, but before 9 a.m., a D.C. Fire spokesperson shared that the person had died.

The spokesperson said the cause of the fire was determined to be debris from a fireplace and said it was started accidentally.

Officials said they would be in the neighborhood door-knocking to share fire safety information.
