A burning body was discovered in a driveway of a home in Northeast Philadelphia early Tuesday morning, as police describe the death as “suspicious.”

The Philadelphia police and fire departments responded to a report of a fire in a driveway in the 8000 block of Leonard Street shortly after 3 a.m., and found a man “with severe burns laying in the driveway,” officials said in a news release.

The man, whose age was not known, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:23 a.m.

A gas can and struck matches were found near the body, police said.

The body was taken to the medical examiner's office and the investigation is ongoing. NBC News has reached out Philadelphia medical examiner's office for comment.

A fence neighboring the driveway appeared to be damaged by the fire and NBC Philadelphia reported a K-9 officer was sniffing for clues at the scene early Tuesday.
