Maryland delegate spotlighted as 'childless cat lady' during Oprah's speech at the DNC

A quick cut to Teresa S. Woorman had people on social media talking.

CHICAGO — The Democratic National Convention entered its third night in Chicago with several high-profile speakers. Among those who took the stage was Oprah Winfrey. During her speech, a quick cut to a Maryland delegate had a lot of people talking. Here's what happened.

During Winfrey's speech, she spoke about how Americans from both parties can come together for common good.

"Despite what some would have you think, we are not so different from our neighbors. When a house is on fire, we don't ask about the homeowner's race or religion. We don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do the best we can to save them," Winfrey said.

She then took a jab at Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance.

"If the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well we try to get that cat out too," Winfrey said to cheers.

For those who might have missed it, Vance recently made headlines after a video resurfaced in which he made a remark about Democrats, which struck a nerve with many. During a 2021 interview, Vance complained the U.S. was being run by Democrats, corporate oligarchs and "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too."

While Winfrey's reference drew applause from the convention crowd, a quick camera cut to a delegate in the crowd had people on social media talking.

"Yo, the camera operator did this poor girl dirty after the "childless cat lady" snark," one X user commented.

That woman is Maryland delegate Teresa S. Woorman. She represents Maryland's Legislative District 16, which covers part of Montgomery County.

"Damn right this childless cat lady is 100% disgusted by J.D. Vance in general and 100% behind Kamala Harris and Tim Walz," Woorman said in response to the viral moment. "Also I may be childless but I do hope that’s not a permanent condition, thanks!"

Woorman applied to serve the remainder of Sara N. Love's term in the Maryland House of Delegates after Love was appointed to the Maryland Senate. She was sworn in earlier this month. Woorman said during her swearing in remarks, she even referred to herself as a childless cat lady.
