The Montgomery County Council unanimously voted to appoint former City of Alexandria Fire Chief and former Prince George's County Deputy Fire Chief, Corey Smedley.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — For the first time in county history, a Black man has been named the Montgomery County Fire Chief.
On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council unanimously voted to appoint the former City of Alexandria Fire Chief and former Prince George's County Deputy Fire Chief, Corey Smedley, as the new Montgomery County Fire Chief. Smedley will also be the first chief who was not promoted from within MCFRS.
"Corey Smedley, with his distinguished service and leadership in the Prince George's County Fire Department and as chief of the City of Alexandria’s Fire Department, brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the future of MCFRS." said County Executive Elrich`
Elrich submitted his nomination of Smedley for fire chief to the county council back in May. The council held a public interview with Smedley in June and by July had a confirmation vote.
"I want to thank County Executive Elrich and County Council for their faith in me to serve and ensure the safety of Maryland’s largest county. I am honored and grateful for this unique opportunity to become a part of this incredible organization," said Smedley.
The new chief will step into his role on July 15.
