Though the lights may dim on H Street, representatives of Mozzeria’s say their mission will live on.

WASHINGTON — For years, Mozzeria on H Street has been more than just a pizzeria. It has stood as a symbol of inclusivity and a hub of Deaf culture.

Mozzeria has provided not only delicious Neapolitan pizza but also opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals to thrive in the culinary arts.

But now, a bittersweet announcement has left patrons reflecting on the impact of this beloved establishment. On Dec. 29, Mozzeria will close its doors in Washington, D.C.

On their Instagram, the Mozzeria team expressed their gratitude to the community:

"Mozzeria has always been so much more than a pizzeria. It’s been a place where Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals found meaningful job opportunities, a space to grow in the culinary arts, and a welcoming environment where people could connect, learn about Deaf culture, and experience the richness of our community."

Over the four years being open, Mozzeria provided countless Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals with opportunities to hone their culinary skills and get jobs. It was a space where employees could communicate without words and showcase their talents in an industry that often overlooks accessibility.

While the closure marks the end of an era for Mozzeria in D.C., the team has assured its supporters that this is not the end of their journey.

"This is not goodbye, but the beginning of a new chapter. We are committed to continuing our mission to elevate Deaf excellence and will explore new ways to bring our experience to you."

Their H Street location is the second of two for the company. The first location opened in 2011 in San Francisco.
