Early Wednesday morning, CBS declared former President Donald Trump the winner in the 2024 election

WASHINGTON — A day after election night, people gathered at the National Cathedral for a Service of Unity and Hope.

The Cathedral opened its doors Wednesday both to those celebrating and those feeling discouraged.

“I’m very happy with the results because I love trump," said D.C. resident Aurora.

“For me as a black woman, I’m mourning the loss of the possibility of a woman of color being president of the united states,” Donna Phillips, said.

Early Wednesday morning, CBS declared former President Donald Trump the winner in the 2024 election. At 78, Trump will be the oldest president ever to assume office.

“I woke up today feeling really sad," Stephanie Desibour, said. "Profoundly sad and confused, upset.”

Desibour told WUSA9, her friend flew to D.C. to be with her on what they thought would be a historic win for Vice President Kamala Harris. Now, Desibour said she finds herself worried about the future of America.

“I pray for safety and reason," New York resident Louisa Young said. "That’s all I can hope for, things that benefit all Americans.”

The Cathedral was open Wednesday until 7 p.m. for anyone who needed refuge.

“Part of why we’re here is to give people the space to bring in, whatever emotions, good, bad happy,” Kevin Eckstron, with the National Cathedral, said.

Many are still processing the new reality and hoping for a peaceful transfer of power.

“We respect the laws and constitution and it’s an acceptance," Phillips said. "And trying to figure out how to adjust your thinking."
