Italian artist Pepe Gaka hand painted the mural at the Eileen Garnett Civic Space.
ANNANDALE, Va. — There's some new artwork to enjoy in Annandale. It's part of Fairfax County's "Paint It, Fairfax!" program aimed at transforming certain areas of the county through community-engaged public art.
The mural by Italian artist Pepe Gaka is the first completed mural under the program. The vibrant piece on the front of the Eileen Garnett Civic Space features two kids with tin-can phone on a bright yellow background. The piece also features bright flowers and two cats. The piece was developed to showcase the diversity of Annandale and the native plant species that are present in the Eileen Garnett Civic Space's educational Garden.
Gaka is a muralist who has worked in Japan, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Canada, and around Europe. He also has a mural on display in the nearby Hybla Valley.
In the coming year, murals will be considered and planned for other areas around the county like Springfield, McLean, Lincolnia and Bailey’s Crossroads. Artists in the Mid-Atlantic region are welcome to submit their portfolios and join the "Paint It, Fairfax!" database, contributing to the artistic tapestry of the county and making a lasting positive impact.
