From Pennywise the clown to one of the most famous vampires of all time, Bill Skarsgård is transforming into Nosferatu in Robert Eggers’ upcoming reimagining of the iconic 1922 German Expressionist silent film. But horror fans will have to keep waiting to see Skarsgård’s full appearance as Count Orlok, as the movie first’s trailer from Focus Features continues to keep the vampire’s complete look a mystery. Skarsgård is barely seen in the clip outside of a few quick shots, but his character’s haunting presence looms large.
“Nosferatu” is directed and written by Eggers, a favorite among horror fans thanks to directorial efforts such as “The Witch” and “The Lightouse.” Eggers’ last film was the Viking revenge epic “The Northman,” which was also released by Focus Features.
“Nosferatu” is “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake,” according to the logline.
Lily-Rose Depp stars as Ellen Hutter, the woman that Nosferatu is obsessed with. Nicholas Hoult is Thomas Hutter, Ellen’s husband and a real estate agent who comes into contact with his new client not knowing that the Count is a centuries-old vampire. Other cast members include Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kraven the Hunter”) as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin (“The Crown”) as Anna Harding and Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz.
Previously, Harry Styles and Anya Taylor-Joy were set to star as Thomas Hutter and Ellen Hutter, respectively, but both dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
“Nosferatu” is scheduled to release in theaters on Dec. 25.
