Police search for child seen in Alexandria parking lot alone

Alexandria Police say the girl ran away after a tow truck driver tried to call them.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Police are working to learn why a young girl was wandering by herself in Alexandria early Monday morning. Police say there have been no reports of a missing child matching her description. However, investigators have not been able to locate the girl.

Officers were called to the 930 block of Van Dorn around 2 a.m. They conducted a search for a girl described as between 8 and 10 years old. A tow truck driver told officers he encountered the young girl sitting alone in a parking lot. When the driver called police, the girl ran away. 

Police conducted a search for the girl, but were not able to find her early Monday.

Alexandria Police are still looking for the girl. She was last seen wearing a purple sweatsuit and carrying a backpack. Anyone who may know where the girl is should contact APD's nonemergency number at 703-746-4444. 

There is police presence in 930 block of N Van Dorn as officers conduct a search for a young girl, 8-10 years old, who was seen sitting alone in a parking lot. One northbound lane of N Van Dorn is closed at Taney.
