ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A man is dead after being shot by police in Alexandria late Monday night.

Police said they responded to a call for service at a building at 5101 Maris Avenue, near Francis City Hammond Middle School, Monday night at around 10:46 p.m. When they got to the building, officers said they found a man with a firearm in the stairwell.

"The encounter resulted in an officer-involved shooting," an Alexandria Police Department spokesperson said in a press statement. The man was shot and pronounced dead on the scene. No one else was injured.

Police have not released any more details yet as to what happened between seeing the armed man and shooting him.

They also have not yet released his identity, but a neighbor that WUSA9's Jess Arnold spoke with on scene said he knew the man. He said he had lived in the building for a long time and was always handy and helpful to his neighbors — with everything from car repairs to HVAC fixes.

This neighbor said he witnessed some of the moments leading up to the shooting.

He said he arrived home to the complex, where his family has lived for nearly two decades, around 11 p.m. Monday. As he was pulling up, he saw two officers running by him.

Gradually, he started to see fire trucks, ambulances, and more police stationed in the complex.

He heard police yelling at the man to drop his weapon and within about 30 minutes of arriving home, he said he heard three gunshots.

The scene has been cleared by 5:40 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the regional Critical Incident Response Team. WUSA9 will update with more information as it becomes available.
