Prostitution and Cloning on the Agenda as ‘Tomorrow and I’ Delivers Thai Sci-fi Anthology for Netflix

Thai film director Paween Purijitpanya has directed “Tomorrow and I,” a four-part anthology series for Netflix. It covers topics including cloning, prostitution, religion and global warming.

The series expands the streamer’s roster of Thai content and represents its first from the country in the sci-fi register. The show will upload from Dec. 4.

Purijitpanya is known for his previous films including “Body,” “Phobia,” “Phobia 2” and “Ghost Lab.” He also directed GMM series “Girl From Nowhere.” “[‘Making ‘Tomorrow and I’] was challenging because everything had to be newly created — the appearance of the city, clothing, technology, and the shape of various devices. In the end, these elements were essential for building a realistic world and helped the actors understand their characters better,” he said.

The first episode “Black Sheep,” is an intense drama featuring Boy-Pakorn Chatborrirak, Ink-Waruntorn Paonil, and Poyd-Treechada Hongsyok about an attempt to bring back to life a dead astronaut. “Paradistopia,” presents a place where all sexual desires are fulfilled by intelligent sex robots trained by sex experts. Its stars Violette Wautier and Timethai.

The third episode, “Buddha Data,” presents a clash between ancient beliefs and AI and asks whether religion can stand reinterpretation. It stars Ray Macdonald, Aelm Thavornsiri, and Pongsatorn Jongwilas.

Set in a country where those in power prioritize personal gain over public welfare, “Octopus Girl” focuses on a flooded slum and a waterborne pandemic. It stars Tangkwa-Chananticha Chaipa, Minna-Wanichaya Pornpanarittichai, and Pingpong-Thongchai Thongkuntom.

The series is produced by Surawut Tungkarak through Jungka Studios. The script is by Paween Purijitpanya, Pat Pataranutaporn, Jirawat Watthanakiatpanya, Abhichoke Chandrasen, Tossaphon Riantong, Panuwat Inthawat and Eakasit Thairaat.

Netflix’s recent Thai titles include horror anthology Terror Tuesday: Extreme based on a popular radio program, an exploration of faith and societal issues in The Believers, perceptions on sex and intimacy from the ‘70s in Doctor Climax, and drama series Master of the House, which was the first Thai title to reach the streamer’s top spot of the Global Top 10 TV (Non-English).
