"Rick And Morty" Announced They're Recasting Ahead Of Season 7 — Here Are 5 Other Times Recasting Worked, And 4 Times It Didn't

1 year ago 6

Eleanor Waldorf is proof that sometimes there is only one person for the job.

At the San Diego Comic-Con, the panel for animated science fiction sitcom, Rick and Morty, announced that they've just recasted ready for season 7.

Adult Swim

Recasting was triggered after co-creator (and voice of both Rick and Morty), Justin Roiland, faced domestic abuse charges earlier this year, and Adult Swim made the decision to fire him. During the panel, executive producer Steve Levy confirmed that the new voices would be "soundalikes" adding that "the characters are the same characters — no change" which will be a huge relief for fans of the show.

While this recasting feels safe in the hands of the producers, I think we can all agree that sometimes they just don't get it right!

I've decided to round up the recasting's that felt good for the soul, and those that we *really* could have done without...

1. Carol from FRIENDS was recast after only one episode, and Ross' ex-wife became a well-loved character.

Warner Bros. Television

Initially, the character was played by Anita Barone who reportedly left after just one episode as she was looking to be a more permanent fixture on a show. Jane Sibbett ended up replacing Anita, and the recurring character became a beloved part of the hit NBC show.

However, things could have been very different, as Jane revealed she was originally considered for the role of Rachel Green. The actor commented that she had no regrets about how things turned out: "there’s no way anybody could have come close to what Jennifer Aniston did with Rachel. She was so perfect"

2. But The Fresh Prince of Bel Air's recast of Aunt Vivian left a sour taste in our mouths.

NBC

For the first three seasons of this hit show, Aunt Viv was played by Janet Hubert who was eventually replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid. Unfortunately, the reason for this switch was due to a reported feud between Janet and Will Smith, with Will telling an Atlanta radio show that "Janet Hubert wanted the show to be The Aunt Viv of Bel Air Show".

These claims have been dismissed by Janet who stated that she maintained a professional attitude throughout the show. Fans of the Fresh Prince are firmly in agreement that the original Aunt Viv held a special place in their hearts, stating "it just didn't seem right when she was replaced, like I felt cheated."

3. Let's be honest, there is only one Eleanor Waldorf, and the Gossip Girl recast was perfect.

Warner Bros. Television

In the pilot, viewers were introduced to Florencia Lozano playing Eleanor Waldorf before being replaced by Margaret Colin in all subsequent episodes. NGL, as a huge fan of GG I can't think of anyone better than Margaret as Eleanor  — in fact, I completely forgot about the recast until now!

4. But I can't be the only one who wasn't impressed with the new Victoria in Twilight, right?

Summit Entertainment

The role of one of Twilight's biggest villains  was originally the responsibility of Canadian actor, Rachelle Lefevre, for the first two films. By the time the third installment of Twilight was released, the change in Victoria was noticeable. Indeed, Bryce Dallas-Howard had taken over the role due to a scheduling conflict with Rachelle.

Reported by Entertainment Weekly, Rachelle revealed that she was "stunned by Summit’s decision to recast the role of Victoria for Eclipse" with the actor adding that "I was fully committed to the Twilight saga" and that the reason she was recast was due to a scheduling conflict of ten days: "Given the length of filming for Eclipse, never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10 day overlap. I was happy with my contract with Summit and was fully prepared to continue to honour it." Personally, Bryce's depiction of Victoria just didn't hit the same.

5. Sean Maguire is *the* only Robin Hood we could ever need in Once Upon A Time.

ABC Studios

Although I love Tom Ellis (major heartthrob), I didn't enjoy the character of Robin Hood until it was played by Sean Maguire. When it came to season two, Adam Horowitz, co-creator, announced that Tom "wasn’t available", before adding that he and the team, "remain huge fans of his, but because we have an arc planned for the character, we had to move forward." Honestly, I'm glad Sean became our Robin Hood, I mean, come on, him and Regina? Iconic.

6. But Dumbledore's replacement in Harry Potter was good, just not good enough.

Warner Bros. Pictures

The coveted role of Albus Dumbledore belonged to Irish actor Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter movies. Unfortunately, Harris had to be recast due to him being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, before subsequently passing away before being able to reprise his role.

From Ian McKellen to Christopher Lee, some iconic names threw their hat into the ring to play Dumbledore, but in the end it was down to Michael Gambon to take the gauntlet. Due to Dumbledore being such a beloved character, many fans didn't agree with this change, claiming that Michael's portrayal was "too energetic and nervous" compared to Richard's calm demeanour.

7. But Drew Van Acker was born to play Jason DiLaurentis in Pretty Little Liars.

Freeform

Parker Bagley played the older brother of Alison DiLaurentis in the first series, yet was replaced by Drew as Jason's role became more prominent in the show. Series showrunner, I. Marlene King, supported this decision by commenting that, "[Drew] works more for where we're going with that story." I couldn't imagine Jason *not* being played by Drew, so this recast definitely made sense.

8. However, Greg being replaced in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend felt a little lacklustre, TBH.

CBS Television Studios

Santino Fontana originally played the character of Greg Sarrano in the first two seasons, but was written out due to Santino only being contracted for one year. The character did make his return in season four, but was instead played by Skylar Astin. The show made a point of character Rebecca being the only one who noticed his change in appearance, but for me, the new Greg felt too different to fall back in love with.

9. And finally, Noah Centineo took over the role of Jesus on The Fosters, and we never looked back.

Freeform

Jake T. Austin was the original Jesus in The Fosters, however, after the actor left the role before season three, it was up to Noah Centineo to replace him. Allegedly, Jake left as at the end of season two as his role was being reduced, and he didn't want to miss out on bigger opportunities. Noah stayed in the role right until the very end of the show being wrapped, and although a tricky act to follow, Noah won over the hearts of many fans — including myself!
