"No member of the Laurel Police Department would ever call to collect money of any sort," the police department said Thursday.
LAUREL, Maryland — No, Laurel Police is not calling you asking for money. It's a scam, the police department in Prince George's County said Thursday.
"We would like our residents to be aware that this is a scam," Laurel PD officials said Thursday. "No member of the Laurel Police Department will ever call to collect money."
Scammers have apparently been calling residents with a phone number that looks similar to Laurel P.D.'s non emergency line. The actual non-emergency number is 301-498-0092, officers noted.

Residents have received calls that have been made to look like our Non-Emergency line, 301-498-0092. The caller demands money claiming to be a police officer.

DMV police departments have periodically been the subject of phone scammers. This summer, many in DC reported scammers were pretending to be Metropolitan Police Department officers.
In that instance, scammers went as far as to email D.C. victims a phony identification card via email to try and verify their false claims.
Scams lurk at every corner of the internet and are a constant phenomenon for anyone with a phone — both over text and over the phone.
